Class 4.8 is the general-purpose commercial bolt: low carbon steel, no heat treatment, and the cheapest grade that still carries a marked property class. It suits brackets, guards, frames and general assembly where the joint is not designed to carry a calculated structural load.
The distinction matters on site, because a 4.8 bolt and an 8.8 bolt look identical until you read the head. Supplying both to the same project without clear marking is how the wrong grade ends up in a structural connection.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use 4.8 where the drawing says 8.8?
No. The connection was designed for the preload and strength of 8.8. Substituting a lower grade removes the margin the designer allowed for.
Why are 4.8 bolts cheaper?
No quenching and tempering, and a lower alloy content. The saving is real, but so is the drop in strength.
